Abstract:

Background: Current evidence suggests a significant association between hyperuricemia and the risk of development of Type 2 diabetes. Family history of Type 2diabetes is an important risk factor, along with obesity, insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, etc. Aims and Objectives:

(1)To evaluate the serum uric acid (SUA) levels and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in offspring’s of patients of Type 2 diabetes, and in age and sex matched healthy controls.(2) To compare and thereby to test the hypothesis that “a significant correlation is present between the SUA and the FBG levels in offspring’s of patients of Type 2 diabetes”.

Materials and methods: Thirty offspring’s of Type 2 diabetes patients (cases), 30,age and sex matched healthy individuals(controls), aged between 17-25 years were randomly selected. SUA, blood urea, serum creatinine, triglycerides, total cholesterol, FBG, and blood pressure (BP) were measured in both groups along with, height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist- hip ratio.

Statistical Analysis: Data was tabulated and statistically analyzed using SPSS software. Results and conclusions: BMI and waist circumference were significantly higher in cases in comparison to controls (P< 0.001, P=0.034). Lipids, renal parameters and FBG were within normal range in both groups. Systolic BP was significantly higher in cases in comparison to controls in spite of being within normal limits. Analysis further showed a significant positive correlation (r=0.339, P=0.067) between FBG and SUA in cases unlike in controls (r=0.242, P=0.198). Hence, it was concluded that a significant positive correlation is present between FBG and SUA in offspring’s of patients of Type 2 diabetes.
