EFFECT OF ISOMETRIC HANDGRIP EXERCISE AND ARTERIAL STIFFNESS INDICES IN THE OFFSPRINGS OF NORMOTENSIVE & HYPERTENSIVE PARENTS.

Abstract:

Introduction: A familial history of hypertension increases the risk of hypertension and arterial stiffness in the offsprings of hypertensive parents.

Aim and objectives : This study was undertaken to assess the underlying hypertension by using the isometric handgrip exercise test and assessing arterial stiffness by using finger photoplethysmography in the offsprings of hypertensive parents and to compare it with age-matched controls of normotensive parents.

Material and Methods : Participants in the study were 50 normal young males of hypertensive parents (study group) and 50 young males of normotensive parents (control group) in the age group of 18 to 24 years. The isometric handgrip test was performed in the study and control groups. The systolic blood pressure(SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial BP was recorded at rest, during exercise and 5 minutes after the exercise. Arterial stiffness was recorded as a single digital volume pulse waveform after 15 minutes of rest. Arterial stiffness index (SI) and reflection index (RI) were calculated. Results: The analysis of the results were done by using SPSS version 17.0, by using the unpaired t- test. The SBP, DBP and the mean BP recorded during rest, during exercise and 5 minutes after the exercise were higher (p < 0.001) in the study group as compared to those in the control group.Arterial SI and RI were increased in study group (p< 0.001) as compared to those in the control group. From this study, we concluded that offsprings of hypertensive parents may develop hypertension & arterial stiffness in future. They should be advised to adopt healthy life style modifications.
