Abstract:

The objective of the study was to estimate the sex differences in hand dimensions among South Indian population. The study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy at Vinayaka Mission's Kirupananda Variyar Medical College, Salem. 250 South Indian medical students (99 males and 151 females; 500 hands: 250 Right, 250 Left) between the ages of 17-20 years were selected for the study. Diseased and/or disabled hands were excluded from the study. The hand length, hand breadth and palm length were measured using vernier sliding calipers and measuring tape. Hand index and palm index were calculated. Statistical analysis of the obtained data was done in relation with gender and side. The dimensions of both hands showed significant relation with sexual dimorphism. The results of our study may be useful to identify sex in medico-legal investigations and to decide man - machine compatibility in designing hand tools.
