EVALUATION OF THE REASONS FOR NON-COMPLIANCE AMONG TYPE 2-DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN THE SEMI URBAN POPULATION

Abstract:

Objective : To evaluate the reasons for non-compliance such as Forgetfulness, Social causes, Negligence, Adverse effects among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients and to estimate the complications experienced due to non-compliance.

Material and methods : The cross sectional survey was conducted in an Outpatient Department of Velammal Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Madurai, which recruited 300 Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. The information was gathered in the form of questionnaire. The information about identity, educational status, Socio-economic status, Diagnosis of disease, occupation and about their treatment. All data collected was analysed electronically.

Results : The important factors affecting non-compliance among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients were found to be Social events (40%) and Forgetfulness (30.7%).About 74.3% patients did not perceive any effects due to non-compliance and about 27% of patients perceived Giddiness and 27% of patients perceived Tiredness.

Conclusion : This is a cross sectional study and only a small group of population is taken into this study. Further, Longitudinal studies have to be done to support the results of this study. Implications for improving patient compliances should be encouraged.
