CLINICOMORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF OVARIAN LESIONS IN A TERTIARY CARE CENTER IN SOUTHERN INDIA.

Abstract:

Background : Ovarian lesions are common gynecological problem in females of any age group. Some non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions occur within the ovaries, and they manifest with a wide spectrum of clinical, morphological and histological features. Ovarian cancer is one of the leading cancers in Indian women and has the worst prognosis among all gynecological malignancies. The objectives of this study were to determine the common morphological types of ovarian lesions and to ascertain the frequency and distribution of the various non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions. Materials and Methods : This was a prospective study done on specimens presenting to the department of Pathology, Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College during the period 2011-2014.

Results : A total of 210 cases with ovarian lesions were seen from the year 2011 to 2014. Non-neoplastic lesions were common than neo-plastic lesions. In non-neoplastic lesions, corpus luteal cyst was commonly seen, followed by the follicular cyst and an endometriotic cyst. Among neoplasms, benign tumors were common than malignant. In benign tumors, serous tumors were commonly seen, followed by mucinous tumors and teratoma. In malignancy, serous carcinoma was common than mucinous carcinoma, followed by endometrioid carcinoma. Epithelial tumors were common in reproductive age group. Germ cell tumors were common in younger age group.

Conclusion: Diagnosis of ovarian lesion is challenging due to its morphological diversity. Clinical data, operative findings and gross features of the lesions may provide important diagnostic clues. A specific diagnosis can usually be made by evaluating routinely stained slides.
