STUDY OF CORRELATION OF BODY MASS INDEX WITH SERUM URIC ACID IN YOUNG OBESE HEALTHY ADULTS

Abstract:Background: Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated, adversely affecting the health and wellbeing of a person. Increased serum uric acid level is commonly associated with conditions like obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and hypertension. Since these diseases are commonly associated with obesity, a need arises to evaluate whether there is an independent association between Serum uric Acid and obesity.
Aim & objective :(1) To find out the levels of uric acid in obese medical students and compare with the uric acid levels of non-obese medical students of Vinayaka Mission's Kirupananda Variyar Medical College.(2) To identify whether there is any significant association between serum uric acid and obesity.
Materials and Methods: A total a 50 obese and 50 non-obese healthy medical students in the age group of 18 to 26 years were taken as study subjects from Vinayaka Mission's Kirupananda Variyar Medical College in our cross-sectional study. Fasting blood glucose, lipid profile and uric acid were analyzed by standard methods. Height, weight, blood pressure were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated in all the study subjects. Student's t- test and pearson’s correlation coefficient were carried out.
Result : Uric acid levels were significantly increased in obese when compared to non-obese medical students (P<0.0001). A significant positive correlation (r = 0.548) was observed between uric acid levels and BMI in the obese medical students.
Conclusion: Since increased serum uric acid levels precipitate the development of hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular events, routine monitoring of all overweight and obese individuals for serum uric acid is recommended.
