Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravitreal triamcinolone in the management of resistant diabetic macular edema.
Materials and methods: This prospective interventional study was done in 52 eyes of 40 patients with diabetic macular edema which persisted after adequate laser treatment for 3 months or more.0.1 ml of intravitreal injection of triamcinolone was given to all the patients and they were periodically reviewed over a period of 6 months. Statistical analysis was done with student’s t - test and percentage. An improvement of 2 Snellen lines was seen in 36 eyes (69.23%). There was a statistical significant (p<0.0001) reduction in macular thickness in the post injection visits. In 12 patients intraocular pressure was elevated which was medically controlled.
Conclusion: Intravitreal triamcinolone seems to be a safe therapeutic option in patients resistant to conventional laser photocoagulation.
