Abstract:

The number of mitral papillary muscle bellies in each group of papillary muscles namely anterolateral and posteromedial were found to vary from 1 to 6. When single bellywas present, the shape of the papillary muscle belly varied and they were classified into conical, mamillated, flat topped, grooved, wavy, arched, sloped saucerized patterns. When two bellies were found in the papillary muscle they were classified into two tiered, interlinked, parallel, arched; 'v','h','y' shape patterns. The site of origin of papillary muscles in the left ventricles were studied . Extent of protrusion of papillary muscles were studied. Two papillary muscles were observed in 40 specimens and six papillary muscles were observed in one specimen. Mitral valve homograft implantation and reconstruction of the left ventricular subvalvular apparatus requires a good knowledge of the morphology of the left papillary muscles. This study is useful to anatomists, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Recent description of the clinical syndromes of papillary muscle dysfunction, papillary muscle hypertrophy, papillary muscle atrophy, papillary muscle rupture, papillary fibroelastoma have increased the clinical significance of papillary muscles.
