      <Abstract>Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) defined as an abrupt and sustained decline in renal function, occurring across wide clinical settings, remains associated with high morbidity and mortality despite progress in medical care. As serum creatinine alone is not a perfect indicator of kidney injury because of its delay in rising and other shortcomings, the risk, injury, failure, loss, end-stage kidney disease and AKI network criteria have been put forward based on serum creatinine and urine output. But still, a reliable tool for early detection of kidney injury was lacking. To overcome this, great effort has been expended to identify robust biomarkers for AKI over the past decade. This has resulted in an enormous expansion in discovery of unique serum and urine biomarkers which can identify kidney injury in AKI much before the serum creatinine begins to rise. This article gives a glimpse of the novel biomarkers which are in the arena with a promise for the future.</Abstract>
