Background: Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke. Platelet aggregability and plasma fibrinogen concentration are also independent risk factors for CAD and stroke. Aims: The present study was designed to evaluate effects of chronic smoking on platelet aggregability and plasma fibrinogen concentration. Also the study aimed to reveal the correlation between platelet aggregability and fibrinogen concentration in chronic smokers and nonsmokers. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from chronic smokers (N=43) and age matched nonsmokers (n=46). Platelet aggregability was determined by modified JR O'Brien's method. Plasma fibrinogen concentration was estimated by biuret method. Results were analyzed by unpaired t test and relationship between plasma fibrinogen and platelet aggregability was found out by Pearson's coefficient of correlation. Results and conclusions: Therewas statistically significant increase in platelet aggregability and plasma fibrinogen concentration in chronic smokers when compared to nonsmokers. Also these parameters showed statistically significant correlation in chronic smokers but not in nonsmokers. From our study we conclude that chronic smokers are at higher risk for CAD and stroke due to increase in platelet aggregability and fibrinogen concentration.
